General Information

Come early if you want to sing. Time and space are limited!

Please be nice to your fellow singers. Jeering, booing, and all other negative feedback are not permitted. It takes a brave person to get up there and sing, so show some courtesy. Inappropriate behavior and horseplay are not permitted. Any activity that could potentially injure another person (dancing on tables, chairs, etc.) will result in your ejection. Songs will be taken in the order in which they are received.

No fishbowl karaoke.

Song Books and slips will be provided. Select your song, write it on a slip, and give the slip to your karaoke hosts. Please do not crowd the DJ table or equipment. Many people want to sing, so we provide the books and slips for your convenience.

You may sign up for only one song at a time. The moment you are done singing, you can sign up for another song. This includes if you are part of duet, or of any other group.

If you want to sing a specific version of a song or otherwise want to ensure we have the song you want, please bring the song on a CD (data or music). If you need lyrics, bring them as well.

If you would like us to use a CD you brought, please clearly label the CD with the track number/name or file name so we can easily find your song. Please also label it with your real name, so can give it back once you are done singing.

No MP3 players. A cappella singing is allowed, DJs can refuse any song deemed inappropriate.

You may sing songs in any language, but all songs must be somehow related to anime, video games, Asia, traditional Japanese folk, j-pop, j-rock, or similar Have fun! Open Mic is not a contest, this is about having fun!

Contest

You may perform only once, either alone or as part of a group-but not both.

All participants must provide contact info on the Registration Form, since we must be able to contact winners.

Registration Forms will be in the Karaoke lounge during operating hours on Friday, and before the competition begins on Saturday morning. Contestant acceptance will be first come, first served.

A maximum of 20 groups or individuals will be allowed to perform, so sign up early. If necessary, a waiting list will be started to account for "no-shows" at the competition.

To ensure the contest starts on time, all accepted and waitlisted participants must be present no later than 30 minutes before the contest begins. In the event of an opening spot, replacements will be selected (starting from the first member of the waiting list to have arrived) and added to the end of the schedule.

To ensure all songs will be available, all participants MUST bring a copy of the music and lyrics they wish to sing. While extensive, our song selection does not contain every song in existence, and your song may not be a part of our collection.

If necessary, the Karaoke Contest Coordinators will set time limits on song length.

Songs will only be accepted on audio CD or in MP3 format.

(MP3s on CDs or flash drives are acceptable; MP3 players are not.) We can also accept songs in many other common music formats, such as .OGG and .MP4. Music must be brought with you at time of check in and clearly labeled with your name, as well as the track number & name of the song. If we can't read your writing, we're not going to play your song.

Please bring a backup song in case another singer chooses the same song as you. The Karaoke hosts can refuse a song for any reason, for example if it has already been sung many times or if it contains inappropriate lyrics. Be sure to bring an audio file or CD and lyrics for your backup song(s).

Dancing is always permitted, and may even sway judges, since visual presentation also judged.

No singing is no singing, and will result in disqualification.

A cappella singing is allowed, provided the song is otherwise appropriate for the contest.

General Karaoke Rules also apply to the Karaoke Contest.

Judging Criteria: The contest will be judged on Vocals, Visuals, and Vibe. Vocal judging includes pitch, enunciation, and other voice-related characteristics. Visuals include movement, choreography, costuming, etc. Vibe includes emotion, audience appeal, and the general feeling behind your performance.

Tips: Practice! Try not to rely heavily on your lyric sheet. Move or dance while you perform. Dress up a little! Sing to the crowd and to the judges. (Especially to the judges.)
