Cosplay: Hall Costume Contest

The hall costume contests will be held on Friday and Saturday at a time and place that will be announced closer to the convention. There is no pre-registration for this event.

Rules

  1. All costumes must be related to Japanese anime, manga, video games or culture (J-Pop, Japanese historical outfits, the Sera Myu musicals, etc.,).
  2. Reference material is not required, but strongly recommended.
  3. Entries are judged on a first come, first serve basis. No pre-registration required!
  4. Entries may be made as an individual or as a group. All groups will be judged as one entry, meaning the group as a whole counts as an individual. A group may consist of as few as two (2) and as many as six (6) people. Groups consisting of more than six (6) people will be asked to break themselves into smaller groups.
  5. The hall costume contest does not use the skill level system; therefore you do not need to worry which division you fall under. This does mean, however, that an award won in the hall costume contest at AUSA cannot be applied to skill level count at other conventions.
  6. You may enter once per day, per costume. The same costume will not be allowed to compete both Friday and Saturday. Costumes entered for the Hall Contest are not eligible for the Masquerade competition(s).
  7. If you did not make your costume, DO NOT enter it for hall costume contest judging. Entries that are found NOT to be the work of the contestant - prior to, during or after judging - will be disqualified. Additional requirements are as follows:
    a. If you are a costumer that is having a friend model your work, GREAT! But you MUST be present at the time of judging.
    b. If you are a parent that assisted a child in the making of his/her costume, you MUST be present at the time of judging.
  8. You do not have to be in character. The judges are looking at your workmanship, not how well you can portray your character. Enthusiasm, though, is always welcome!

The winners will be announced prior to the Masquerade Awards ceremony. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each day. Honorable Mentions can also be given at the judges' discretion. The best entry from both days will receive Best Overall Hall Costume.

Questions can be directed to hallcostume@animeusa.org and they will answered as promptly as possible.

For clarification purposes, I would also like to mention that the Hall Costume Contest has a separate set of judges from the Masquerade Workmanship and Skit competitions. Our wonderful array of cosplay guests may pop in from time to time to see the costumes being offered for the hall contest, but they are not judging it. If you wish to be judged by our Cosplay Guests of Honor, I strongly recommend entering the Masquerade Workmanship competition. This does not require a skit, but you may be asked to walk across the stage.
